Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has fired a warning to summer signing Vincent Janssen and could eye a new striker this summer, The Daily Mirror reports.
What’s the word?
Since signing for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, arriving for a whopping £17m, Vincent Janssen has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League and is yet to net a goal from open play, with each of the 22-year-old’s four goals coming from the penalty spot.
Only one of those efforts has been in the Premier League and Spurs opted to leave Janssen out of the Europa League squad that lost to Gent on Thursday evening and the Lilywhites will seek additional forwards at the end of the season if Janssen doesn’t improve.
Janssen was signed to provide competition to star-man Harry Kane but has thus far failed to do that, even at the start of the season when Spurs’ top-scorer was unavailable due to injury. Whilst not admitting a transfer push will be made this summer, Mauricio Pochettino has urged Janssen to provide more.
What was said?
Speaking to reporters ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Fulham, Pochettino responded to questions as to whether Janssen would feature by saying:
“Maybe, maybe. He needs to show more and we’ll see. Maybe he will have the opportunity to be on the bench or play from the start.”
“Performance is always about how the players show their quality, their belief on the training ground.”
Do Spurs need a striker?
Regardless or not of whether Janssen can improve his performances between now and the end of the season, Tottenham Hotspur should still look to sign a striker this summer as the Lilywhites lack significant depth.
That was shown at the beginning of the season when Kane was injured and Spurs cannot afford to enter another campaign with just two senior strikers, especially if the North London side secure another top-four spot and Champions League football.
With Kane and Janssen 23 and 22 respectively, a more senior, experienced striker could be the perfect addition to Tottenham and would provide competition to the two young talents, as well as allowing more room for squad rotation.
